Whakatane - Means 'To act like a man' in Maori. When chief Toroa and his tribe landed on the beach with their canoe, all the men left to explore the new land. Then, the rising tide lifted the canoe. Wairaka, Toroa's daughter, was the only woman with the courage to defy the ban on woman handling the canoes and she pulled the huge canoe back onto the sand.
